The Stateless Nations Geo-politics (SNG) project is aimed at creating an online tool for the analysis and study of these European national minorities that do not have an independent state for their self-government. That is why we call them "stateless nations", a name that does not entail any pre-conception about the collective will of the communities thus considered. Sovereign states and nation states are studied by political science from the point of view of their physical and political geographic reality. So far geopolitics have only addressed the study of the relative position of the independent states of the world with regard to their challenges and opportunities, their assets and their weaknesses.

The SNG project wants to contribute with basic statistical data to the geo-political analysis of these European national communities that do not have their own sovereign state although they face the same challenges of today's world as independent states do. As stateless nations, it is important to appraise their relative position with respect to foreign states as much as to the powers of the state they belong to, to other stateless nations and regions that also belong to the same state and to the ongoing trends and pressures that influence their evolution. However, these relevant data are quite incomplete, difficult to find or simply not tracked by governments or research centers. That is why we try to find out and collect these statistical data whenever such thing is possible, and present them from the perspective of each stateless nation studied. For instance, we consider interregional trade within the state they belong to as "international trade", since for a stateless nation geo-political analysis trade balance with a foreign state is as relevant as it is with other regions of its own state (see also “SOME DEFINITIONS”).
To know better and more systematically about the strengths, weaknesses, threats and opportunities of the European stateless nations will help us assess their fitness to successfully cope with these challenges, maintain their distinctive personality against the assimilating tendencies common in most plurinational states and keep pace with the times if they want to ensure that they will have a future and perpetuate through the ages.

SNG is still an ongoing project at its early stages and too many things need to be completed, updated and improved, as well as a larger number of stateless nations added. Your comments and cooperation are welcome. You can get in contact with us at: info@statelessnations.eu
